Service also benefits the person serving. It teaches responsibility, humility, patience, cooperation, and accountability. Many members discover that service shifts their focus away from self-centeredness, which is often at the core of addiction, and toward helping others. By becoming part of something larger than themselves, members strengthen their own recovery while contributing to the recovery of others.
